Design of Shear Reinforcement for Structural Members

DESIGN FOR SHEAR REINFORCEMENT
WSD

Procedure:
(Note: This procedure is a simplified version I summarized of the theoretical computation to be used for NIA structural designs. Please check with your conventional method.)

1. Compute for actual shear at a distance d from the support.
(d being the total height of the beam where the critical shear is)

2. Compute for shear strength of concrete alone.
Vc = 0.29 bd√(fc')

3. If Vc < Va, Compute for required steel strength
where Va = actual shear at critical section

4. Vs = Va – Vc
where Vs = required strength of steel

5. Spacing, s = Av.fs.d/Vs

6. If no stirrup is required, smax = Av.fs/3.5b or 0.30m
